The story of the Phoenix comes from ancient Egypt during the origins of the legend of Hermes. The Phoenix is said to rise from the flames and ashes of its own burning death. The Phoenix symbolises Transformation of consciousness that comes from dying and being reborn, much like the Christian concept of resurrection or the Eastern idea of reincarnation. The double-headed symbol from Hermetic tradition offers the additional Eastern concept of duality and paradox of human cognition.
I adopted the symbol in the early '70s, drew the basic design and had it cast in gold by jewlery artist, Michelle Bonella(?).
The Phoenix reminds me that my life is about continuous growth in consciousness, most often, through the Experience of primal and cathartic transformation. The ruby-rose is meaning that I added to emphasize the Path of the Heart---compassion for myself and others in the Process of growing awareness. I believe that I often change only when my Pain is greater than my Fear of Change. Growing awareness of my Intention leads to Choice and Transforms Pain to Passion.
